Dead Men Rising started in the early 1970s. I was a young man seeking to grow in righteousness and faith. As I struggled with typical sins of early adulthood, I sought the Word of God, good teaching, and good books and am grateful for all I received from others. Many people pointed me to the message of Romans 6 and the idea that if I reckoned myself dead to sin by faith, I would experience death to the power of sin and have victory.

But something about that teaching bothered me. It wasn't just that it didn't work, but it was that I sensed something was not quite right with the interpretation of Romans 6 and similar passages such as Galatians 2:20.

I continued to ponder the text and listen to popular speakers on the subject. Finally, one day I decided to take a big step.

If I was going to answer the questions that bothered me, understand what Romans 6 meant when it said we were dead to sin, and if I was going to lay to rest my doubts about popular teaching on the subject, I knew I had to examine the text in depth. I went to a local seminary library, pulled out my Greek New Testament and other study tools, and went to work examining the text, verse-by- verse. I started in Romans 5:12 and slowly, week-by-week made my way through 8:13, examining every verb, every noun and consulting definitions for all key words. I spent one year in 1983-84 doing this, and it was one of the richest times in God's word in my life. I was amazed by what I discovered, and the groundwork was laid for Dead Men Rising!
